About the coffee

Armando Sanchez is a talented coffee farmer from the Huadquina Cooperative in Peru. Armando tends to his farm at 2100 meters above sea level on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains, overlooking the Inca site of Machu Picchu. The terroir, with its extreme altitude and rich volcanic soils, coupled with Armando’s dedication to cultivating rare varieties, all contribute to producing outstanding award-winning coffees. Armando placed 1st in last year's Fairtrade Microlot Gold Cup of Peru and 2nd the year before that.

During the leaf rust pandemic of 1998, the Peruvian Government forced all cooperatives to grow only varieties that were resistant to the disease but of much lower quality. However, Huadquina, along with Armando, committed to growing only high-quality varieties and continued to practice innovative farming methods that allowed forward-thinking farmers to continue growing coffees that are celebrated today.
