About the coffee

The Masha Washing Station, built in 1989, is located in Gihororo, within the Kayanza region. Named "Masha" from the Kirundi word for "herds of cattle" due to the area's cattle abundance, it serves over 1,128 farmers who deliver cherries. Despite widespread coffee cultivation in Burundi, smallholders produce small harvests, typically from 200-250 backyard trees. Many of these trees are growing the Red Bourbon variatal and harvesting is mostly a family effort, with selective hand-picking during the season of mostly the Red Bourbon varietal. The Lacafe ORO yeast used during fermentation has been specifically developed for coffee. It has a specific metabolism that enhances the coffee's fruity characteristics and the extended fermentation allows the beans to absorb metabolites creating a complex flavour profile that is full of Plum Jam, Apricot and Manuka Honey.

How to brew

We're here to demystify brewing a good coffee and to strip it back to basics, so that everyone can be confident of getting barista-quality brew at home.
Brew Guides

Fireheart – seasonal, fresh and alive with flavour. That's Living Coffee.

Our small-batch coffee is always seasonal, always hand-roasted to order, and posted direct to your door in 100% recyclable packaging.

We also pay our farmers 50% more than FairTrade prices for a true living wage. That's why we are Living Coffee.

Seasonal Coffee

Different regions have different harvest times throughout the year, so we buy freshly harvested beans, only when they're ready.

That's why our coffee tastes different—it's still alive with flavour when you drink it.

Roasted to order

Coffee is made to be drunk when the beans are at their peak freshness. It's why we roast to order, pack it and post it.

You'll want to keep coffee in bean form until the past possible minute to get the full flavour.
